Physical education programmes of study: key stages 1 and 2

Intent of Physical Education, Sport & Physical Activity

Through the delivery of high-quality PE lessons, leadership opportunities and the offer of a variety of extra-curriculum sports clubs, we look to inspire children, increase their enthusiasm and confidence and encourage a positive attitude towards a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation and involvement in sport.

How do we do this?

With the introduction of the PE & Sport Premium by the Government in 2013, we have a sum of money each year to spend solely on school PE & Sport. Please see the document below for the details on how we allocate these funds and the impact it has on our pupils. Collaborating with local sports clubs also enables sport specific coaches to introduce their specialism to our pupils. Professional athlete visit days also offer aspirational stories to inspire our pupils.

Impact so far?

Through the employment of a PE specialist as subject co-ordinator, PE and sport has become central to the life of HPS. Pupils enjoy inclusive and challenging PE lessons which foster life skills such as: teamwork, respect, determination, co-operation, honesty and passion. Pupils have the opportunity to take on leadership roles within lessons. Everyone takes part in a number of intra school (level 1) sports competitions during the year and are offered the opportunity to represent HPS at inter school (level 2) sporting festivals and competitions. We consider the ability and experience of the pupils when inviting them to take part, as some of these events are for more able/experienced or less able/experienced children. Teachers are aware of the importance of physical activity during the school day, outside of PE lessons, play and lunchtimes. Resources are available to them to make active learning part of everyday. They often take learning outside and use personal challenge both within and out of PE lessons. We have built up very good relationships with local community sports clubs who consequently support our clubs and offer opportunity for those pupils wishing to take up that sport outside of the school environment.
